Thousands Vote at the CCF

The Chaldean Community Foundation hosted its first ever Early Voting site from October 26-November 3 for Sterling Heights and Utica residents. Within the nine days of early voting, the CCF saw 8,050 voters come through its doors. Many first-time voters came through the CCF as well, with great excitement around being able to participate in the voting process.

CHAI Program featured in AARP Show

November was Family Caregiver Month in the state of Michigan, and a perfect opportunity to shed some insight into the programming offered through the CCF’s Breaking Barriers program. A half-hour program called “Real Possibilities” through AARP Michigan airing on ABC 53 in the mid-Michigan area is recognizing CCF’s C.H.A.I. (Caregiver Helping Aid Initiative) Project.

Creating Future Leaders

After attending six months of learning and connecting with area top leaders, cultivating leadership skills, and developing relationships, the Learn with a Leader program got together for the last time as a cohort. In collaboration with CCF and Wireless Vision, Learn with a Leader graduates were honored November 6 during their program graduation at Shenandoah Country Club.

Elias Kattoula celebrates 10 years at CCF

The CCF congratulated Elias Kattoula on 10 incredible years with the Chaldean Community Foundation on October 3. Elias began his journey with the Foundation in 2014 as a Case Worker and quickly rose to Career Services Manager. Over the years, he has made a lasting impact, earning his Global Career Development Facilitator Accreditation in 2018 and becoming a Certified FAFSA Specialist.

Hungarian Consul Visits CCF

Hungarian Consul General Dr. Balázs Mártonffy recently visited the CCF to learn more about their programs and advocacy efforts for persecuted Christians throughout the Middle East. He was warmly welcomed by CCF staff, who expressed their appreciation for the Hungary Helps program, which has supported Chaldeans and other Christians in northern Iraq.

Celebrating New Americans

The CCF hosted their New American Celebration on September 17. This annual event celebrates individuals that CCF has assisted through the U. S. immigration department or have taken the 10-week citizenship preparation course and have gone on to obtain U.S. Citizenship.  The event was hosted on Citizenship Day.

Little Scholars Open House

With school season rapidly approaching, CCF’s Little Scholars students had the opportunity to tour the facilities prior to the start of classes. They were able to familiarize themselves with the facilities and meet their teachers and classmates as well. Outside vendors were on hand to supply information and resources. These vendors included Delta Dental, PBS Kids, Macomb Community College’s Dental Science Program, the Sterling Heights Police and Fire Department, Aqua Tots, Detroit Wildlife Refuge, and more.

The Circus is Back

Breaking Barriers, the program that serves individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities, hosted the Breaking Barriers Circus in September. Acts included a tightrope walker, strongman competition, jugglers, dancers, singers, ribbon twirlers and more. The audience was treated to popcorn and cotton candy and the parents of the participants had their own private circus show.

Sterling Heights and Ankawa Officially Become Sister Cities

The CCF has facilitated a sister city relationship between Sterling Heights, Michigan and Ankawa, a city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Sister City agreements are meant to be long-term partnerships that foster an environment in which economic and community development can be implemented and strengthened. This historic partnership aims to foster cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and mutual understanding between the two cities.

Back to School

On August 8, the CCF hosted Warren Consolidated Schools for their Back-to-School event. Nearly 300 people attended, with parents and students having the opportunity to meet with WCS staff and learn about the resources WCS offers. Each student also received backpacks filled with school supplies. The event included information regarding athletics, careers, nutrition, and more.

Scholarship Success

Past scholarship winner David Shammas credits CCF’s Career Services for helping with the FAFSA, working his way through a Bachelor’s, followed by master’s degree in computer science, and specializing in Software Engineering from Oakland University. Born in Baghdad, Shammas arrived in the U.S. in 2013 after spending 7 years in Syria.

Back to School Events

On August 8 and 22 respectively, the Chaldean Community Foundation will host Back to School Events for two local school districts: Warren Consolidated Schools is scheduled for August 8 (6:00pm-7:00pm) and Utica Community Schools is on August 22 (6:00pm-7:00pm). Both events take place at the Chaldean Community Foundation, 3601 15 Mile Road in Sterling Heights.
