Scholarship Success

David Shammas

Past scholarship winner David Shammas credits CCF’s Career Services for helping with the FAFSA, working his way through a Bachelor’s, followed by master’s degree in computer science, and specializing in Software Engineering from Oakland University.

Born in Baghdad, Shammas arrived in the U.S. in 2013 after spending 7 years in Syria. With English posing a major barrier, he completed his high school education and made many friends with whom he is still in contact today.

“It’s very important to believe in yourself and your abilities,” shared Shammas. “There might be obstacles along the way, but with determination and perseverance, you can overcome any challenge. The journey is just as important as the final goal. Software is ubiquitous and represents the future. Since moving to the U.S., I have always aspired to work in this field.”

David was a recipient of the w3r Consulting scholarship fund in 2020 and is one of the many success stories to come from the CCF’s Scholarship Program. With increasing demand every year, the CCF’s Academic Scholarship Program receives hundreds of applicants vying for their chance to receive a scholarship and support their efforts at higher education.

Through support from w3r Consulting, Drs. Nathima and Peter Atchoo Family Foundation, Yvonne Nona Memorial Scholarship Fund, Abdul Karim and Jameela Sesi Memorial Scholarship Fund, DA Advisory Group, the Karim and Bernadette Sarafa General Fund, the Derek Dickow Scholarship Fund, and Alline Salon Group, the CCF will award more than $80,000 in scholarships to college students this year. Winners will be awarded at a private celebration at the Chaldean Community Foundation on August 16.
