Census day is April 1, 2020!

The Census is a physical count of all people living in the United States, that takes places every 10 years. Census participation is required by law. The Chaldean Community Foundation’s (CCF) 2020 Census Campaign will work to provide an accurate count of Chaldeans in Southeast Michigan and the tri-county areas of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties where Chaldeans reside. Chaldeans were vastly under-counted in 2010, as their race was not listed in the questionnaire and there was confusion as to what they should write when checking the “Some other race” box. The 2010 Census numbers indicated that there were only 45,000 Chaldeans living in Michigan. An independent study conducted by the University of Michigan Dearborn, the Chaldean Community Foundation and the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce counted nearly 160,000 Chaldeans in Michigan.

It is critical that you participate in the Census to ensure an accurate count of the Chaldean community. Without a complete and accurate count, we stand to lose congressional representation, federal funding for programs that matter to you and your family including healthcare, housing, nutritional assistance, kids’ school lunches and other community services. This data will determine how federal funding will be divided amongst communities every year for the next decade.

Help us to effectively advocate for our community by completing the 2020 Census. Census information will be mailed to homes beginning in mid-March. You can complete the Census via internet, phone, or mail-in paper questionnaire.

If you don’t have access to a computer or have questions about completing the Census questionnaire, please visit the Chaldean Community Foundation or call (586) 722-7253.
