High School Students Co-Found Non-Profit to Aid Kids with Cancer
What can a high school student do nowadays to stand out on their college application? One sure way to get noticed is to create a charity that does good work and makes a significant impact on the community.
Enter Miles for Smiles, a nonprofit dedicated to spreading smiles and creating unforgettable memories for children battling cancer. Select individuals get the chance to feel the rush of the racetrack, surrounded by supportive friends, family, and a community united in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Dreamed up in the “vibrant halls” of Cranbrook Kingswood High School, the website describes “six spirited students” who “found themselves drawn together by a love for the rumble of engines and the thrill of speed.”
The founding students are President David Schmitt, Steven Loiselle, David Antone, Sam Fisk, Joe Wiater, and Michael Aguilar.
On May 19 at M-1 Concourse, Miles for Smiles hosted an event presented by sponsor KIDSGala that allowed pediatric cancer patients and their families to feel the adrenaline of riding in a high-performance race car on a controlled track with experienced drivers.
“It felt very rewarding to be able to host wonderful families and children who are going through hard times,” said David Antone, “and to be able to put smiles on their faces was surreal for us.”
Other activities included a magic show, face painting, ballon creations, photo booth and display cars. All designed to put a smile on kids’ faces.
