20 years of September cover stories

As we stated in the beginning of the year, we are looking back at headlines each month to chronicle what was important to the community as the years passed.
The September 2004 cover title, “What Now?” posed a pressing question to its readers in the wake of devastating church bombings in Iraq. As Iraqi Americans grappled with the shock and grief of these attacks on their spiritual and cultural sanctuaries, the article explored ways the diaspora could mobilize and make a difference.
In September 2005, we turned our spotlight on the burgeoning fashion scene within the Chaldean community, focusing on the bridal industry. The issue showcased prominent designers like Nina’s Bridal and Betsy’s Bridal, as well as the unique offerings of Alanis by Betsy, helmed by Betsy Nasouri.
The September 2006 issue celebrated a significant political achievement with the headline “A Big Win.” It detailed Mark Abbo’s successful campaign for a seat in the state legislature, marking a milestone for the Chaldean community’s representation in politics. This victory was presented as a testament to the growing political influence and engagement of Chaldean Americans, underscoring the importance of having a voice in legislative matters that impact both local and broader communities.
In September 2007, we reported on the arrival of Iraqi refugees who resettled in the United States after years of arduous waiting and perilous journeys. The article chronicled the challenges these refugees faced, including the long wait times, imprisonment for protesting, and grueling escapes on foot.
The September 2008 issue tackled the sensitive topic of cultural contradiction within the Chaldean community, focusing on the struggles faced by Chaldean gays. The article explored the conflict between personal identity and traditional community values, particularly how LGBTQ+ individuals navigated their sexual orientation in a society where such topics were often stigmatized. It shed light on the challenges of reconciling personal truths with community expectations and the church’s teachings, offering a nuanced perspective on the intersection of faith, culture, and sexuality.
In September 2009, we examined the experiences of Chaldean grocers who felt undervalued despite their hard work and dedication. The article highlighted the significant role these grocers played in their communities, providing essential goods and services. It addressed their frustrations with being overlooked and the challenges they faced in a competitive market.
The September 2010 issue focused on the importance of selecting Catholic schools for Chaldean families. It explored the various factors influencing parents’ decisions, such as academic quality, religious education, and community values.
In September 2011, we highlighted the inspiring achievements of Rob McKany, who was celebrated for his extraordinary accomplishments in climbing. The article detailed McKany’s remarkable feats, including his climbing expeditions and personal milestones. It emphasized his determination and perseverance, illustrating how he overcame physical and mental challenges to reach new heights.
The September 2012 issue shared the transformative experiences of individuals who spent a life-changing summer in Iraq. The article chronicled their missions, which included humanitarian work, cultural exchanges, and personal growth, while the September 2013 issue addressed the rising issue of homelessness within the Chaldean community.
In September 2014, we reported on the united response of the Chaldean community to the crises in Iraq. The headline “United in Faith” captured the collective efforts to support Iraq through fundraising events, advocacy, and humanitarian aid.
The September 2015 issue focused on the challenges faced by families raising children with special medical needs. The article provided insights into the unique difficulties and triumphs experienced by these families, including access to medical care, educational support, and emotional resilience.
The September 2016 issue celebrated World Youth Day and its impact on the Chaldean community. The article described how the global event reignited the spiritual fervor and enthusiasm among young Chaldeans.
In September 2017, we covered the partnership between Mango Languages and the Chaldean Community Foundation. The article explored how this collaboration provided resources for Chaldeans to learn and preserve their native language.
The September 2018 issue focused on the emergence of a Facebook group for Chaldean mothers, Chaldean Moms of Metro Detroit, providing a virtual space for connection and support. The article detailed how the group facilitated discussions on parenting, shared experiences, and offered advice on navigating cultural and familial challenges. It has since grown to include over 14,000 members.
The September 2019 issue honored the memory of Jimmy Aldaoud, who died in Iraq after being deported from the United States. The article recounted Aldaoud’s tragic story, including his struggles with deportation and his final days in Iraq. It addressed the broader implications of his case, highlighting the emotional and legal challenges faced by deported individuals. The piece served as a tribute to Aldaoud’s life and a call for reflection on the impacts of immigration policies on individuals and families.
In September 2020, we examined the volatile state of the real estate market during the COVID-19 pandemic. It provided insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by real estate professionals and buyers alike during this unprecedented time.
The September 2021 issue celebrated the remarkable career of Fr. Boji as he retired after five decades of dedicated service to the Chaldean community. The article reflected on Fr. Boji’s extensive contributions, including his role in spiritual guidance, community outreach, and pastoral care. It highlighted his impact on countless individuals and families, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to his faith and the Chaldean community.
In September 2022, we featured a gripping account of an Iraqi Christian’s struggle to evade deportation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The story aimed to shed light on the harsh realities faced by many immigrants and the desperate measures some take to avoid separation from their families and lives built in America.
The September 2023 issue spotlighted Thomas Denha and his inspiring journey toward achieving his dreams. The article narrated Denha’s ambitious goals and the steps he took to realize them, showcasing his perseverance and dedication.
All of these cover stories serve as a snapshot of the Chaldean community and the issues they’ve faced over the past two decades.
