Malik Yousif Mary
Professor Malik Yousif Mansour Francis (Fransi) Gorgees Yousif Francis Mary was born in Baghdad, Iraq, on August 24, 1931. He passed peacefully at his home on October 3, 2023, surrounded by his wife Amira, son Raed, daughters Raghad, Rand, and Rana, brother Adhid, and sister Suha.
Malik was educated in England and the United States and received a master’s degree (MA) from Ohio State University. He had a long academic career and served as Professor of English Language and Literature at Al-Mustansiriyah University (1976-1999), Baghdad University (1964-1976) and the Department of Education in Iraq (1954-1960).
Professor Mary lived a long life, completed many of his dreams, and will be remembered by the countless lives he touched, the minds he shaped, and the hearts he inspired. His legacy will carry forward the lessons he taught, the value of knowledge, the importance of kindness, and the significance of lifelong learning. His influence will continue to shape the world we live in through the knowledge he shared and the love he gave.
Malik is survived by Amira, his wife of 58 years, so many family and friends who will cherish his memories as a historian, writer, poet, friend to many students, colleague of academics, and an extended Mary/Miri family including grandchildren Andrew, Isabelle, Natalie, Katherine, Allison, Zahary, Luca, Lawrence, and Jordan.
