Coming to America
Bushra Hormis finds the help she needs
Excerpts from a translated testimoniaL
Bushra Hormis is an Iraqi expatriate who came to America and faced many difficulties, including learning a new language, translating and filling out paperwork, and finding employment. Bushra thanked God when she heard about the Chaldean Community Foundation, which aids immigrants in general, and Iraqis in particular. Said Bushra, “I would like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to Him for this great idea of providing useful and beautiful assistance.”
Bushra reported that when she came to the Foundation, she didn’t feel they had any problems or complicated treatment, because “they receive you with the best reception.” According to Bushra, all the CCF employees are likable and patient and provide advice with great openness. “No matter how much I talk about their good qualities,” she said, “I feel like I fall short.”
Bushra is so completely grateful, and wishes the entire community to be grateful, too. Whenever she enters the Foundation building, she feels as if she has entered her home, in terms of reception and cleanliness. “We thank them very much,” she expressed, “and ask the Lord to give them strength and fulfill their wishes just as they fulfilled ours for us.” Bushra faces difficulty with the language, and says it is hard for her and those like her to learn the language easily.
“If it were not for the Foundation’s help,” Bushra went on, “we would be even more lost than we are now.” She feels every immigrant who needs help should come to the Foundation. “They will welcome you from the bottom of their hearts,” she explained. “And when you come to this place, you will not feel that you are dealing with an employee, but rather with your sister, daughter, and brother. It is a great project.”
The Chaldean Community Foundation provided Bushra with support and assistance and communicated with other parties on her behalf. She said the Foundation saved her from embarrassment and humiliation. “When you need someone to help you once or twice, the third time he will feel uncomfortable offering you help,” she explained. “But thanks to God, this Foundation was opened for us to visit whenever we needed them at any time and for any reason.”
Bushra is currently enrolled as a student in the ESL classes at the CCF.
